Make a Gift Bag from Wrapping Paper: Simple DIY Tutorial

Just as we transformed old grocery paper bags into decorative paper leaves, now we’re taking leftover wrapping paper and turning it into charming gift bags. If you tend to buy more wrapping paper than you use, this is a simple, eco-friendly way to repurpose the extras into something practical and attractive.

These DIY gift bags are ideal for birthdays, anniversaries, housewarmings, or any celebration. The project is quick, affordable, and can cost nothing if you use paper you already have on hand. Below is an easy step-by-step guide to make your own.

Instructions

Step 1: Cut a rectangle of wrapping paper measuring 29 x 21 centimeters. Fold it lengthwise, leaving a 1.5-centimeter overlap along one edge.

Step 2: Apply glue to the 1.5-centimeter overlap and press it against the opposite side to form a tube.

Step 3: On one open end, fold upward 5 centimeters; this will become the base of the bag.

Step 4: Open the folded section on that end so the sides flatten out and form two triangular flaps at each corner, plus two larger flaps at top and bottom.

Step 5: Fold the top flap down to the center, aligning its edge with the middle crease at the bottom.

Step 6: Fold the bottom flap up so it slightly overlaps the top flap, then secure both layers with glue to close the base.

Step 7: On either side of the base you’ll notice square shapes—fold along these lines to create crisp, defined creases that shape the bag’s sides.

Step 8: Unfold the creases slightly and gently open the bag from the top, allowing the bottom and side folds to expand until the bag takes shape.

Step 9: Cut four small squares from scrap paper and prepare two lengths of satin ribbon for handles. Make the ribbons long enough to carry comfortably.

Step 10: Position the ribbon ends inside the top edge of the bag, placing each pair in the center on opposite sides to form handles.

Step 11: Glue the small paper squares over the ribbon ends on the inside to secure the handles. Press firmly and allow the glue to dry before using.

And that’s it—your handmade gift bag is complete. It’s a satisfying way to recycle wrapping paper into something useful and attractive. Try different paper patterns and ribbon styles to make bags that match each occasion.
