Made with apples, peanut butter, strawberries, sunflower seeds, and edible eyes, these Monster Apple Bites are a playful, nutritious snack. They’re ideal for Halloween or any time you want a fun, kid-friendly treat that’s lighter on sugar than traditional sweets.

Many seasonal treats are high in fat and sugar, but you can still serve something festive without relying on candy. These Monster Apple Bites use whole-food ingredients that most parents are happy with: crisp apple slices, creamy peanut butter (or another nut/seed butter), fresh strawberries, crunchy sunflower seeds, and a few edible eyes to make them silly and inviting.
The edible eyes are purely decorative, but the rest of the components offer fiber, protein, healthy fats, and vitamins—exactly the kind of snack to balance out occasional indulgences. Turning healthy ingredients into little monsters makes them far more appealing to children, and they’re quick to assemble.

Serve these Green Monster Apple Bites as an after-school snack, at a Halloween party, or anytime you want a festive finger food. Kids love the silly presentation, and adults will appreciate the simple, nourishing ingredients.

Monster Apple Bites Ingredients

- 1 green apple
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (or your favorite nut/seed butter)
- 2 strawberries
- 24–28 raw shelled sunflower seeds
- Edible candy eyes (optional, for decoration)
Monster Apple Bites Recipe

1. Cut the apple into quarters.
2. Lay each quarter flat and cut a 1-inch wedge from the peel side to create a mouth. Don’t cut all the way through—leave the quarter intact so it opens like a jaw.
3. Slice the strawberries lengthwise into four pieces to create tongue shapes.

4. Spread peanut butter inside the cutout on the bottom half to act as glue and to form the monster’s mouth.
5. Press a strawberry slice into the cutout so it looks like a tongue sticking out.

6. Insert 6–7 sunflower seeds along the top edge of the cutout to create teeth. Add edible eyes on top of the apple or on the peel to complete the monster face.

7. Serve immediately for best texture and appearance.
How to prevent Halloween apple treats from browning
To keep apple slices from browning, soak them for 5 minutes in a solution of 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt per cup of water. Rinse the slices thoroughly afterward and pat dry. This method slows oxidation without making the apples taste salty.
